How to Start a Journal Practice

There are many types and techniques of journals. For many people, it is easier to start a gratitude journal than other types.

The first thing to do is find a journal, notebook, or an already-made gratitude journal. Step time to journal, like in the morning or before bedtime. Keeping a journaling practice is a good habit stack. Like a journal after you take a shower. Or after you prepare for the next day?

Write a few things that you are grateful for today, but also go deeper into why you are grateful for them. Decide how much time you want to spend journaling?

Other types of journaling are braindump, stream of consciousness, and morning pages. These 3 are all simpler in nature. Morning pages are written first thing in the morning by hand on paper.  There are also creative or expressive writing and prompt journaling. You can alos start an art or doodling journal. There are many others you can search on the internet.

The others can be done on screen or on paper. Journals are often kept private or destroyed before or after death.

The goal is to pick one that speaks to you, try several, and pick one or two to start. What do you enjoy the most?

What are the benefits of journaling?  It would be easier to stay positive, organize your thoughts, express your emotions, help with memory and cognition, sleep better, reduce blood pressure, stress, and anxiety.
